Our third workshop on horticulture was lead by Julia from the Horticultural Society of New York. She discussed the difference between annuals and perennials, to which students had some very good questions, can annuals also be perennials? Julia then went on to discuss the difference between native and invasive plants, weeds, and the importance of healthy soil. They learned about the benefits of adding compost and fertilizer when planting. In addition, they discussed various irrigation techniques and rain water collection. Julia discussed the benefits and setbacks to insects. The students learned we want pollinators not pests in our garden!

Here is Patty holding an earthworm, which is great for our soil!
